Les Fuchigami was born on Lanai, Hawaii, the pineapple isle. By the age of 15 he started out working the fields and began conducting research on pineapples. Although he started out as an architecture major he graduated from the University of Hawaii with a (BS) in Horticulture and a minor in Plant Pathology. Les then went on to earn the following degrees from the University of Minnesota, (MS) in Plant Pathology and (PhD) in Horticulture and Plant Physiology.
In 1970 Les accepted a position in the Horticulture Department at Oregon State University as an ornamental and nursery crop physiologist. He retired as Emeritus Professor of Horticulture in 2000. During his academic career he also served as Department Head of Horticulture and Interim Associate Dean of Extension at the University of Hawaii.
Les has collaborated with scientists worldwide through industry and competitive grants securing 1.5 million dollars for research. He has authored more than 150 scientific papers, received various teaching and research awards and has been granted 3 patents. He has also teamed up with and made many friends in the nursery industry using his resources and education to find solutions for the problems facing the industry. Les has worked extensively with antitranspirants and as co-founder of Nature Sciences LLC, Nature Shield™ the “Next Generation Protection” antitranspirant, is his second introduction to this market.
Les and his wife Elaine have been married for 49 years and have 5 children (4 daughters and 1 son) and 6 grandchildren. Their home is in Corvallis and he and Elaine continue to help the horticulture industry by conducting relevant research that may someday help the horticulture industry.
